At Matrix, we believe that if you’re not making meaningful innovations, you’re falling behind. So as the fitness world and the needs of our partners changed, we had to make sure our Connexus functional training equipment evolved as well.

How could we create a functional training solution flexible enough for the demands of small group training, yet intuitive enough for self-guided workouts in uncoached environments?

A Functional Need

Like all our best innovations, the reimagining of our Connexus Series started with listening to feedback from our partners in the fitness industry.

Unused Training Spaces

In unstaffed facilities, our partners noticed that functional training spaces were often underused despite the fact that interest in functional training was growing industrywide.

Serving Younger Members

Functional training was becoming especially popular with younger members, who would often show up with a guided workout on their smartphone. However, there was no convenient place to put their device, so they struggled to follow along.

Defining the Challenge

Our team began by investigating existing solutions for self-guided functional workouts in both health club environments and vertical markets like hotels and multi-family housing.

A Poor Fit for Fitness Facilities

Existing training stations weren’t designed to fit the space or serve the goals of functional training zones. Worse yet, they were big and bulky, taking up far too much valuable floor space for how little they were used.

Far from User-friendly

Because the design of many functional training stations on the market weren’t user-friendly or intuitive, beginners often didn’t know where to get started.

The Cause of Clutter

Since most of the existing solutions didn’t offer a clearly defined space to store essential accessories, functional training areas often became cluttered.
